About the Author
Michael G. Maxfield is Professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College, City University of New York. He is the author of numerous articles and books on a variety of topics, including victimization, policing, homicide, community corrections, and long-term consequences of child abuse and neglect. Working with students and colleagues at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center, Professor Maxfield developed the evidence generation approach to applied justice research. He served as editor of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency from 2008-2016.

Earl R. Babbie graduated from Harvard University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and began teaching shortly thereafter. Credited with defining research methods for the social sciences, Dr. Babbie has written several texts, including the bestselling THE PRACTICE OF SOCIAL RESEARCH and THE BASICS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH.

Buyer Beware. I received a Teachers Edition, that had all of the information removed and binding had been all cut out. Had it proven by a professor. If this is your option, I would look into buying from university bookstore.

This book sucks. Revise the content please.

I usually enjoy reading texts especially since it pertains to my field, however I found this textbook extremely difficult to read. Not because of the concepts but I found the author's examples and text altogether is just odd to read, as if it were written by an amateur. I don't know what it is exactly but I'll tell you you will not enjoy reading every word of this textbook.

Nicely done

The very best part about this story is the setting in the late 1800's in San Francisco. Especially interesting is the inclusion of the Chinese community. The storyline moved quickly. The characters were stretched a bit too far to truly believe in them. The struggles within the romance were also a bit hard to accept-a bit too stubborn with constant lack of communication when just explaining things would have solved so much. But the exciting plot and wonderful setting makes this a 4 star story.

About the Author
David B. Dollenmayer is Professor of German at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. He received his B.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University and was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Munich. Dr. Dollenmayer has written on 20th century writers Alfred Döblin, Joseph Roth, Christa Wolf, and Ingeborg Bachmann. In addition, he is the author of THE BERLIN NOVELS OF ALFRED DÖBLIN (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1988) and the translator of works by Michael Kleeberg, Anna Mitgutsch, Perikles Monioudis, and Moses Rosenkranz.

Thomas S. Hansen is Professor of German at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass., where his current research focuses on 20th century book design. He received his B.A. from Tufts University, studied six semesters at the University of Tübingen, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Dr. Hansen is the author (with Burton R. Pollin) of THE GERMAN FACE OF EDGAR ALLAN POE: A STUDY OF LITERARY REFERENCES IN HIS WORKS (Columbia, SC: Camden House, 1995) and CLASSIC BOOK JACKETS: THE DESIGN LEGACY OF GEORGE SALTER (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 2005). Two old friends set out for a weeklong romp through Santa Ynez, Calif., wine country that comically strains their friendship in Pickett's lively debut. Smart, hapless narrator Miles is divorced and broke, and his novel's been rejected all over town. His handsome, "ursine" best friend, Jack, a successful actor, is about to get married, and wants to enjoy a few last days of freedom. Pickett gleefully chronicles their many minor adventures, including the oversexed Jack's attempts at getting laid, a boar-hunting episode and a staged car accident. Add to that massive amounts of wine: oenophile Miles swills rather than sips, and Jack's always been a party guy. While Jack works his charm on the ladies, Miles has his own flirtation with a lovely waitress. Miles can be a delightful narrator, but he's no prince: he's a bore when it comes to wine, for example, and he can get a little pseudophilosophical ("photos mock the present by staring back at us with their immutable luster of our youthful past"). He also thinks nothing of snatching a couple thousand dollars from his alcoholic mother on her birthday. But redemption for all is promised and Pickett takes his readers on a jolly ride. His novel sounds like a perfect buddy flick, and indeed, it will have its chance: Alexander Payne (About Schmidt; Election) is directing it for Fox Searchlight.

Their road trip of endless imbibing and carousing feels like Dharma Bums updated with metrosexual panache. Jack's suave demeanor and classically handsome mug get both friends into uproarious and dangerous situations in this rambling comedy of errors. Gotta love Miles

I hate to say this, but the movie was better. Paul Giamatti makes Miles a much more sympathetic character and you really feel that he is a good guy underneath his flaws. In the book Miles comes across as a narcissist who likes to intimidate friends with his vocabulary and pretensions. We already knew how he ripped off his mom and lied about other things, but at least the film version has you rooting for him because he is adorably down on his luck. Jack however, Jack is just the same. It is hard not to laugh at his antics and his down to earth base motives. Also the book has a "boar hunt" that did not need to be there, except to show the locals as gun-toting rednecks. Some of the names were changed in the film, and Jack's girlfriend does not have a daughter in the book. I also wanted to meet his annoying in-laws but they are only in the film version. Overall a good read but not one to make you love Miles.

The Book vs. The Movie

Traditionally, a book is better than the movie version -- notable exceptions include "Field of Dreams," "Ordinary People," and "The Horse Whisperer." But now, finally having read this book and seen the movie multiple times, I vote for the movie, while giving enormous credit to Rex Pickett.

Having read the book, one must wonder about some of the choices made in the movie -- why, for example was Miles moved to San Diego for home base and why does Maya vanish for more than the last half hour of the movie? We all know the most famous line from the movie about f***king Merlot, but in the movie, the line just seems to drop out of nowhere. As Pickett writes throughout the book, Miles is so anti-Merlot and it's explained why -- we're not surprised when he gives the line in the book. I also like the fact that the novel gives context to the term "Sideways" and has Miles saying goodbye to Jack in Paso Robles, a moment lost in the movie.

As I said, give Pickett credit because the major plot points in the movie are mostly originally established in the novel. But the idea that Jack would have to pay Maya to have sex with Miles seemed silly and the whole subplot with Brad and wild boar hunting seemed irrelevant. A good book editor would have slashed this novel by at least 50 to 75 pages and made it tighter. Way too long.

I give Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor enormous credit for taking the great parts of this story and making them ring true emotionally. They truly deserved the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Replacing "Terra" with "Stephanie," replacing her shotgun with a motorcycle helmet, making Maya into a more complete person, including that lovely monologue about wine. They also put things in the proper sequence.

So the novel is more a curiosity piece to me and I suggest any aspiring screenwriter buy the book and see the movie. I would have loved to been the fly on the wall and seen/heard Rex Pickett's reaction the first time he either read the script or saw a preview. Different worlds.

Fun for wine lovers

For anyone who enjoyed the movie, this is a must read. The book begins with a hysterical wine tasting that should have made it to the movie, but didn't, and the ending was far more satisfying than the one in the book. Pour yourself a glass of wine--preferably not merlot--and enjoy!

You WILL be inspired!!!

THE BEST material out there in showcasing how today's most innovative, forward thinking, most successful companies are ensuring their success by making their employees come first. Shared some bullet points of this book at an all managers' meeting and my excitement was infectious. I work for a large global corporation, and my store manager took many of the practices presented here to the Service Office, and some policies have already been implemented, in part. There's a take-away for everyone in these pages, from top management to the lowest position. A most inspiring, fast and easy read that should be required reading for everyone in retail, hospitality, food service, online business.....everyone! I have purchased two loaner copies for my coworkers, and have given this gem of a book as a gift......cannot recommend it more highly.

I really enjoyed this book because it operated on two levels for ...

As someone who heads an organization and reads quite a bit about leadership, I really enjoyed this book because it operated on two levels for me. It gave me plenty of affirmation for some of the things I'm trying, but at the same time it introduced me to some new ideas and examples. Now I can make my cases more strongly. So while it didn't stretch/challenge me the way I like for books to, it still provided great fodder for thought. And if someone is not well versed in current thinking on new leadership models, it's a great, thorough and thoughtful introduction.

Content rich, editing poor

Disappointing not in terms of content but in poor editing which results in needless repetition. The topic is one worth reading about, the research is sound and referenced, but the variable quality of some passages can distract an interested reader. The section on Simpson alone seemed to raise the same points with a frequency which made me wonder if my kindle was looping.

As an aside: in order to convince the reader that the thinking in the book is current, references to the common law principle of the "prudent man rule" in relation to fiduciary duties should have been referred to as "prudent investor rule."

This is not nit-picking but the above are an example of how a book should aim to be precise and succinct rather than meet a 240-odd page target (I am reading the kindle version but assume that it is within the typical range for most books).

Nevertheless, I plan to trudge onwards and complete the book in order to glean the insights since newer books on value investors are a rarity and help to further form a picture of names we consider synonymous with the approach and perhaps even to improve our own strategy on longer term wealth creation.

probably in an attempt to up the page count, the authors repeat basic information throughout the book. this approach may make each chapter a complete topic on its own merits, e.g., if interested in reading about a particular investor.

when read cover to cover, it's clear easily 20% of the book's passages were referenced at least once elsewhere in the text.

It's a great book. It is somewhat repetitive. I seem to read the same quotes multiple times throughout the book.

The profiles are inspiring and informative. A few that I had not heard of. A well read investor will know most of the investors profiled in this book.But putting them together and focussing on the concentration in their respective styles is a new twist.

Definitely worth at read!
