About the Author
David Barnett is Reader in Drama, Theatre and Performance at the University of Sussex, UK. He has published books on German theatre (studies on Heiner Müller and Rainer Werner Fassbinder), and is preparing a history of the Berliner Ensemble, the first book of its kind in any language. He has also published several essays and articles on German, Englishlanguage, political and postdramatic theatre.

Having now read David Barnett's excellent study several times, I believe it offers the best explanation for Brecht's methods yet written in English. Barnett elegantly shows how Brecht's theatre practice was always tied to his theory of why theatrical art should be produced. Based on his extensive research in the Brecht Archive, Barnett offers detail after detail about Brecht's collaborative methods, all aimed at changing the audience's view of the world. This is a must read for anyone who wants a clear picture of Bertolt Brecht in practice.
