As IBM´s official liaison to the Ethereum core developers I gave talks on blockchain topics pretty much around the world. After one keynote I was asked for a non-technical guide to understand blockchains. This is it.

The book aims to help you get your head around blockchains in general and around Ethereum specifically. Since Ethereum is currently the pre-imminent blockchain, it makes sense as reference point. The essential stuff is the same for any blockchain.

This text was written for people with a fast grasp, who are not programmers. Reading this should give you the basics to cut through the hype and to identify blockchain opportunities in your professional domain. There are tiny bits of code, which can be admired and skipped.

We´ll look at Ethereum´s benefits first, how it is used and what can be done with it; then explain blockchain machinery, visiting the terms that you´ll be confronted with in every discussion about its application. Exactly what you need to tell the signal from the noise in the echo chamber of honest misunderstandings and desperate marketing.

We take a good hard look at limitations, throw in some history and names and give a realistic outlook.

The index reads like an FAQ and you can use the book like that. However, there is a strong build up, one chapter leading to the next, as optimized path to understanding all the interconnected, moving parts. There´s quite a number of them.

Blockchains are not a trivial topic. The fact that blockchain client programs are small has fooled many people into believing it can´t possibly be that hard. The challenges are in the implications though.

But what’s in this book will put you ahead of almost everyone outside the core bubble.

A deep dive into this field now – at least getting started – will help you to become part of the fun ahead. It should allow you to stand out, land deals or a great job.

Henning Diedrich has been called IBM's most knowledgeable guy in blockchain, and a thought leader in this field.

He was named architect at the IBM blockchain group, writing the first white paper for IBM's Open Blockchain project and is the official IBM liaison to the Ethereum Foundation's core development teams, helping to harden Ethereum for industrial use.

“I got into blockchain because I became fascinated by the technology, the same as with language design, database architecture or coding in the first place.

In blockchain tech, many domains coalesce that I have worked in. I started programming age 12 hacking computer games, and always remained passionate about performance and whatever resembles 'AI'. I worked in fintech, distributed databases and functional programming, domains that are all of special significance for the future of blockchain at this point. I created a compiler and virtual machine for the insurance industry, which an eternity before it, looked eerily like Bitcoin's VM. I started programming crypto stuff a decade ago.

I am evangelizer for the best distributed, high-velocity database out there, VoltDB, and suffered with them through different stabs at solving distribution. Which is what the blockchain community re-lives right now.

In a way, it's all coming together for me in blockchains. I had to fall for it.“

to the point block chain book

I am a financial professional, not knowing much about block chain and related issues. Very well written, clearly defined terms, even for the non-techie like myself. Enjoyed particularly how the author has pointed out the nuances among bitcon, ethereum, zcash, etc.

Good balance of "dumming down" the subject matter while also being just technical enough in order to grasp the wide implications block chain may have.

Belongs in your library

George Simon has a genius for organization. He takes a complicated subject of human behavior and breaks it down to easily understandable subtopics, exploring the gamut of character traits from neurosis to psychopathy. He gives simple, easy to follow strategies for dealing with the manipulative people in our lives, whether they are patients or relatives. He even addresses the concerns of people who have rid themselves of the disturbed character that plagued them and suggests ways to move on.

I was particularly impressed with his chapter on the process of character development and his conclusions as to how character - or the lack of it - affects everyone in our society at every level. It's the most pressing issue of our day, yet seems to be the most ignored.

Personally, I found the book engaging because I have read multiple works on psychopathy, abusers, victimology, narcissism, etc., even scanning the DSM IV on and off for years trying to pin-point the pathology of a disturbed character in my life. He didn't fit into any of the boxes in any of the books. Finally, in Simon's first book, "In Sheep's Clothing," I found my answer. I was thrilled to find an author who understood those people who do have a conscience but act as if they don't because it is so underdeveloped, and who could explain to me how to deal with them.

By the way, if you've read the 1-star review (I always start with the lowest review, myself) you'll probably have come the conclusion I did: that the reviewer has...issues. Yes, Simon does say that disturbed characters refuse to submit to any authority, because they want what they want now in the easiest way, and they want to "win." They have great insight, and understand that others in our culture submit to a "God," a "higher authority," or the will of "society." They just refuse to do so. So yes, the word "God" is in the book, along with many other words.

Laypersons and professionals will both benefit from this book. Enjoy!

Dispelling the myths about mental illness

The time for this book is way past overdue, and Simon's subtitle couldn't be more appropriate. Character disturbance is the phenomenon of our age, plain and simple. What does that mean? Well, in a nutshell, Dr. Simon defines character disturbance (and their more intense form of character disorders, which includes psychopathy) as the degree to which people LACK specific virtues, ethics, social conscientiousness, and commitment to social behaviour worthy of respect. It is the degree to which a person evades personal responsibility, feels entitled to things they have not earned, lies, cheats, cons, and steals. The problem is, our society has become so inured in these narcissistic patterns, to see them for what they are is as difficult as asking a fish about water. They are our new norms, rewarded in business and daily life, while true character is derided as weakness and out of date.

This book is just full of gems and is probably the best primer on manipulation tactics I've read. Simon makes the difference between neurosis and character disturbance very clear and shows how they need totally different techniques in order to correct. The old psychological concepts that were developed in order to deal with neurosis are the ones that are out of date, and are totally ineffective when it comes to poor character. They also lead to a culturally self-reinforcing blindness, where we treat people with extreme character disorders as if they just lacked 'self-esteem', had 'bad childhoods', or are just 'acting out' their own insecurities. As Simon points out, in cases of character disorders, these simply aren't true. And as long as such behaviours aren't recognized and dealt with, nothing will stop them. Result? Just look at the amount of fraud and corruption in the financial industry. If they can get away with it, they will.

The book has chapters with very clear explanations of all the concepts, tactics, and disorders, as well as transcripts from some of Simon's own sessions. All are highly informative, simply written, and applicable to everything from teenagers to convicts. Highly recommended.

Outstanding book

This is a must-read for anyone going through any part of life with a person who is character disturbed. Understanding how your own behavior and weaknesses contribute to the situation is of paramount importance, and this book will help people understand how to change those behaviors. Getting inside a character-disturbed person's head is a little scary, but this, too is extremely important in order to effectively respond to them. The author knows his topic thoroughly. Great book!

Grade 2-5-Coyote is in her female guise, and King reminds readers immediately that she is responsible for everything in the world-rainbows, rivers, toenail polish, and TV commercials. Her favorite thing of all is playing ball-all positions at once. But she finds it rather boring without a companion. However, the beavers have dams to build, and moose and turtles are also otherwise occupied. The humans will play, but they get rather hostile when Coyote wins every game. (After all she makes up the rules, and changes them as she pleases.) Then, three ships, Christopher Columbus, and a crew of clowns arrive. Will they play ball? No, they say, they've got to find things they can sell. No gold? No computer games? Convinced they're in India, they decide to grab some of the Native people and take them back to sell in Spain. Columbus sails away with his captives, the remaining humans catch the bus to Penticton, and when Coyote tries to fix things, what does she get? Another bunch of funny-looking clowns, led by Jacques Cartier. Monkman's illustrations are perfect. Brilliant colors are daubed onto screwball figures, and anachronisms abound. What seems a funny romp turns out to have a very sharp edge. This irreverent treatment of Columbus and his fellows may be disquieting to some, but it is long overdue.

Not the usual European take on Columbus

I grew up in Bensonhurst. BIG Italian neighborhood. Right on 18th Avenue - you can believe we knew it when it was Columbus Day! Parades up and down the block!

And this is what we learned in school... let's see... Columbus was a Hero, and very Brave, and he Discovered America, and he Explored, and... oh yeah, and we learned that little ditty about sailing the ocean blue.

This is what we didn't learn: Columbus wasn't just lost on the way to India, he drastically miscalculated the size of the earth - and all the sailors knew it. (The size and shape of the earth had been worked out back in the time of the Ancient Greeks, so this was nothing new.) Oh, yeah, and when he showed up in the Americas he promptly took several "Indians" back with him as slaves. Yippee.

Of course, there are two sides to every story. Columbus didn't believe himself a villain, that's for sure. But if you teach kids a one-sided portrayal of history when they're five and six and seven and eight, it's going to be much harder to teach them that real life is more complicated than that.

It looks like kid biographies nowadays at least mention the whole slavery thing... sorta... but they don't seem to focus on it. A quick perusal of the options will show titles calling Columbus a Hero, an Explorer, a Man of Faith, and an Adventurer. Not "Columbus. He was a dude who messed up" or "Columbus. Did some bad things too".

Oh, and you see this book as well.

This book is great. Fantastically colored illustrations, and a funny way of telling a story. It's full of pointed anachronisms, too, which do help lighten the mood. I mean, it's an uncomfortable subject. It's easier to talk about if you can joke a bit at the same time.

The book is a bit wordy, and with the aforementioned anachronisms and all it may be better to read this to the later end of the 4 - 8 age range.

Back in 1492 Columbus sailed and met his due

I have never ever ever seen a picture book like this one. Never. This book first came to my attention when I heard that it was one of those great "lost" children's books. I mean, roughly 5 bazillion picture books are published every year, so one or two good ones are bound to slip through the cracks here and there. Naturally curious, I plucked it and discovered that it is perhaps one of the most original stories I have ever had the pleasure to see. Though not without its flaws, it gives Columbus the drubbing he so rightfully deserves. I only wish it could be better known.

In this tale, told in an easygoing vernacular, we read that Coyote created the world. She (love it!) created both good (rainbows, flowers, clouds) and bad (prune juice, commercials, Columbus himself) things. But what Coyote loved more than anything else was to play baseball. Most of the animals Coyote creates aren't keen on the idea of playing, but the human beings enjoy the game. Unfortunately, Coyote always cheats and always changes the rules. Pretty soon she has no one to play with again and in her distraction and boredom she doesn't see the things that are created out of her head. Before she knows it the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria are knocking on the door and some funny looking people are coming aboard. Coyote can't get these fellows to play ball either, they're so busy looking for stuff to sell. Next thing you know they've captured the people already living on the land and are selling them for a profit back in Spain. Coyote tries to fix everything but when she tries to do so (her nose tends to fall off when she's trying hard) suddenly there's Jacques Cartier and a whole new bunch of goons. The native people catch the first train to Penticton and Coyote is left with the new group, trying once again to get them to play ball.

It wasn't the ending I expected in the book. I had thought there'd be some sort of a happy ending or maybe some way in which Columbus is made into a fool for everyone to see. But this book is pretty darn honest about Columbus's intentions, as well as his treatment of the Native Americans. And Coyote has always been a trickster god, neither good or bad. She wouldn't go saving people just because she made a mistake. In fact, it's completely realistic that she's make the problem even worse. The tale is told with a wonderful style of its own. Coyote says things like, "These people I made have no manners. They act as if they've got no relations" (in reference to Columbus & crew). So if you're hoping for a happy ending to this fable, you're barking up the wrong tree. If you're looking for a book with a fabulous take on a variety of different legends, this book is appropos.

And by the way, you've never seen anything to match it. The story's good, sure. But it's William Kent Monkman's illustrations that bring everything fully to life. The book's drawn in what I can only describe as psychedelic woodcuts. Consider them woodcuts on PCP. The native people tend to have pretty normal colors and shades, whereas the Europeans are a gaudy cacophony of violent pinks, greens, oranges, and purples. And as for how everyone looks, Monkman's style becomes even more original. Coyote, for her part, is decked out in a hot pink tank top, shorts, and running shoes at all times. Columbus is a ridiculous clown with a red nose and bright orange hair. His men resemble an odd assortment of gangster/conquistadors. I think one of them is almost Elvis.

When I said this book was absolutely original I meant it. However, there's no denying that some aspects of this tale, most notably Coyote being a baseball fanatic, are remarkably similar to Michael Chabon's recent foray into children's literature in "Summerland". Whether Chabon actually came up with the concept on his own is up to the reader to decide. But of the two, give me my "Coyote Columbus Story" any day. The only book you can honestly compare it to, at this moment in time and in terms of content, is John Marsden's breathtaking "The Rabbits". Holy moley, if you combined the two in a storytime you'd have some of the most ethnically conscientious toddlers alive today. In any case, I'm just gonna say that as modern legends go, Thomas King struck gold when he chose to tell a whole new kind of Columbus story. This next Columbus Day, consider countering that day o' genocide with a reading of this excellent little number. Even if you don't take to it, you'll have to admit that it's an amazing creation to behold.

The trickster Coyote at her best...now messing up Columbus!

America is the country that it is just because Coyote wanted
to find a good baseball team! Or so says Thomas King in
this extremely playful take off on both the legendary
trickster Coyote and her crazy encounter with Columbus's
"discovery" of America. Thomas King has found a hilarious
way to poke fun at just about everything he can, from
Columbus's mistake to our preoccupation with vacation
vehicles. And the dazzlingly colorful illustrations add
to the wild and wacky world of turtles, moose, Native
Americans and, of course, Coyote, who's nose falls off everytime
she laughs.
A quick easy read, King's book deserves a spot near the best
of Dr. Seuss.
