intricate web among the characters,

"The Battle Lord's Lady" is set in the future of three-hundred years; mankind is struggling to survive a great collision that has changed the earth forever. People are living in compounds, battling the elements and mutations. The people are trying to live each day with the struggles of all the mutations that have developed over the centuries.

Atrilan Ferran is a mutant huntress who was awakened one night to the sounds of screams; she discovers that the cleaners have invaded and are out to slaughter everything and everybody that gets in their way. Atrilan is a master with a bow and arrow and is able to kill sixteen of the men invading her compound.

The cleaners are headed by Yulen D'Jacques, the battle lord of Alta Novis, and being stunned over the fact they were nearly defeated by a woman, Yulen makes a deal with Atrilan. The deal between Yulen and Atrilan is if she agrees to teach his men how to be effective with a bow and arrow, he will provide safety for her people, Atrilan agrees.

As Yulen and Atrilan travel back to Alta Novis, they are attacked several times. With each attack, Atrilan is the one to save them all. Before reaching Alta Novis, both Yulen and Atrilan realize their mutual attraction to each other and that they have fallen in love. Now that they have reached their destination of Alta Novis, both Yulen and Atrilan will have to prove their love for each other is good and right to both man and mutant.

Will Yulen and Atrilan be able to overcome rejection from man and mutant, or will they form a lasting bond between the two. Will their love triumph all? You will need to pick up a copy of "The Battle Lord's Lady" to find out the rest of the story, and you will not be sorry as this is a well written story with believable characters. The author has strung an intricate web among the characters, making this an entertaining read.

Didn't like it...

I'm sad to say that I didn't like this book, at all. Here were some of the thoughts that I had while reading it:

(1) The genocidal backdrop didn't exactly put me in the mood for romance. Yes, I know the "Cleaners" had a "lifetime of conditioning" against the Mutahs, but that still doesn't make me cool with the genocidal behavior.

(2) Yulen becoming so intrigued/smitten with Atty from the get-go didn't seem to make much sense, and therefore, it was hard (or, impossible) to get invested in his character and their relationship. So, a guy who went through such lengths as to be scarred in order to save one of his men, because "he wasn't going to risk losing another man," could so quickly fall for a girl who just killed sixteen of his men? Why did he fall in love with her so quickly, and more importantly, *how* did he?

(3) Of course, conveniently, Atty doesn't have any of the disfiguring kinds of Mutah traits.

(4) "Like two halves of a whole, they each slowly slid off their horses." Oh boy, so mawkish. The whole romance in general was oversentimental, really.

(5) It sure doesn't take long for Atty to start calling Yulen "Yul," and ask if he has a wife. Again, the relationship between the two happens so fast with no real development.

(6) Mary Sue much?
“Why do I get the feeling she’ll never cease to amaze us?”
“She cooks. She can shoot the eye out of a flea at a hundred paces. And she’s a one-woman ammunition depot. The only thing she isn’t is a lusty wench in bed, but I guess you already have plans on what to do about that one, right?”

(7) All the plot points seemed pretty forced.

At the end of the day, this is a romance book, with a very poorly developed romance. I didn't feel anything stronger than apathy about the relationship between Yulen/Atty, and therefore, I felt very detached from the entire story. None of the fantasy or world-building elements were interesting enough as to save the book elsewhere. The characters were one-dimensional. I'm struggling to try and think of one positive thing about this book, but just can't seem to do it. I did manage to finish it, so, there's that, I guess.

This series is beyond sci-fi or hot romance! It is da bomb!

I cannot say enough great things about this series! I love Atrilan with her blue hair whose courage and mad hunting skills gains her the attention of the Battle Lord who along with us, falls for her, too. Theirs is an epic love on the scale of Romeo & Juliet, Scarlet and Rhett, Tristan & Isolde except of course thankfully for us, their love continues to grow and thrive through each new book. Why is it so epic? Their love grows amidst a planet full of dangerous creatures at every turn in an environment filled with hostile people who believe this love is an abomination. Mutant (mutahs) and human cannot not be together. All mutants must die and the mutant genes must die with them. And yet with each demonstration of her skills and her innate courage and goodness Atrilan brings about change in how mutahs are perceived. The love between Yulen (Battle Lord) and Atrlan (mutah) affects all those who witness it and proves once again how we are more alike than we are different. And being different should be celebrated.

Okay, not great -- loses steam -- prefer the 1st one

The author does a decent but not wonderful follow up to her popular, well written 100 Things book.

You get the sense that she loses steam, especially at the end when the tips perceptibly go from many pages to just half a page.

The insights are still well researched and backed by data.

A few WOWs here and there

I haven’t read the first book, but chose to read the follow-up instead.

As with many “xx things about” books, this was not the most enjoyable thing to read. However, it does provide some reinforcement on topics if you’ve already done some research. For example, she mentions System 1 (she calls “truthiness”) and System 2 thinking from the book “Thinking Fast and Slow”. It also comes across a few marketing-related subjects like shopping and storytelling based on cognitive dissonance.

The book does fall of a bit at the last quarter, which gives you the impression that the author is rushing just to reach 100 (there you go, cognitive dissonance!).

The (almost) perfect book on the topic

As a MPH student, I was required to purchase this book. I find it great. All the topics are treated in deep and the author's expertise as a former Public Health Professor gives it a first-hand knowledge on the matter. I have enjoyed the case-studies and the interviews have given me relevant and wise advices for the Public health topic, as well as for my professional life. As a con, I'd love this book to have some pictures like funny cartoons to exemplify some points, because it 'just' has conceptual figures, models, and tables. Anyway, it remains as one of the best texts on the field.

About the Author
Stefan Kostka received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and served on the faculties of The Eastman School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to Materials and Techniques of Post-Tonal Music, he is the author (with Roger Graybill) of Anthology of  Music for Analysis and (with Dorothy Payne) of Tonal Harmony, With an Introduction to Twentieth Century Music. Kostka is now a University of Texas Professor Emeritus, and resides in northwest Massachusetts.

TOO EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT IT IS

I think it's a pretty good book. I'm in my 4th semester of conservatory-level theory and we needed to get this book for our section on post-tonal music. I mean, I don't see why you'd really wanna buy it unless you have to for a class. If I didn't have all this music experience, I'd probably not get much at all from the text.

TOO EXPENSIVE, THOUGH!!!!! I seriously paid $110 dollars for a skinny paperback book :(

You will find yourself in these women's stories and learn to love your whole self unconditionally!I found this book inspired me to look deeper with in. It was uplifting and informative and helped me accept my unloved parts as important aspects of me. Without them I am not whole, without them I could not truly experience self love.
