The authors also include a detailed presentation of the theory of conics and quadrics, including the theory of conics for non-Euclidean geometries. The book contains many beautiful geometric facts and has plenty of problems, most of them with solutions, which nicely supplement the main text. With more than 150 figures illustrating the arguments, the book can be recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate-level courses in geometry.

Thorough Look at Purity

This book is basically a biblical theology of sex. It deals with the major issues in regard to sexual purity, such as pornography, adultery, homosexuality, celibacy and other pertinent issues. Gary Inrig is a clear writer and well organized in his material. Something that stood out in this book to me was how Inrig focuses on trying not only to present the prohibitions of the Bible against sexual sin, but also a positive view of sex within God's ordained perimeters. Like many blessings of God such as food and drink, sex can be a great privilege within marriage, but outside of God's design , it can make people's lives a living nightmare. Recommended.

This is a much needed book in our society today!

I had to read this book for my theology class as well as write a 12 page review. Here's part of what I wrote in my review.
Pure Desire - Moral Sanity in a Sex-Saturated Culture is a book that is much needed in our society. It’s not just a book that you can purchase, read, and place on a shelf after reading it. Inrig work challenges us to examine ourselves to see if we are walking in that place of purity according to God’s commands, loving others unconditionally, and being good stewards of the blessings that God has given us. It has definitely given me great insight on what it will take to have a successful marriage and to be a better Christian.The only area of improvement that I say was that I would love to see Inrig add areas in the book where we could’ve done some reflections or some Q&A’s.

About the Author

Hassen Fourati is currently an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble, France, and a member of the Networked Controlled Systems Team (NeCS), affiliated with the Automatic Control Department of the Laboratoire Grenoble Images Parole Signal Automatique (GIPSA-LAB) and the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA). He holds a B.Eng in electrical engineering from the National Engineering School of Sfax, Tunisia; master’s in automated systems and control from the University of Claude Bernard, Lyon, France; and Ph.D in automatic control from the University of Strasbourg, France. His research interests include nonlinear filtering, estimation, and multisensor fusion with applications in navigation, inertial and magnetic sensors, robotics, and traffic management. He has published several research journal articles, papers in international conferences, and book chapters.

While Lincoln lays dying, Booth's accomplices clumsily attempt to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, and Booth talks his way past a guard meant to bar him from crossing a bridge into Maryland. In focusing on Booth, the author reveals the depth of divisions in the nation just after the war, the disorder within the government and the challenges ahead. Divided into 14 chapters and an epilogue, the sentences are shorter and chapters are condensed from the original but the rich details and suspense are ever present. Lacking are a bibliography and a notes section. Excellent black-and-white illustrations complement the text. Devoted to the South, John Wilkes Booth had planned to kidnap Lincoln and hold him hostage, but when that plan did not materialize, he hatched his assassination plot. Co-conspirators in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia helped him escape and evade capture for 12 days before being surrounded in a barn and killed. Readers will be engrossed by the almost hour-by-hour search and by the many people who encountered the killer as he tried to escape. It is a tale of intrigue and an engrossing mystery. Though Booth remains his principal focus, the author cuts cinematically among the actions of the other conspirators. This device succeeds in building suspense but sometimes proves awkward and confusing, especially where chronology is concerned. Worse, there is no appended matter—no index, no notes on sources, no bibliography, no time line. As a result, statements like “It was the most beautiful night in the history of the capital,” or “Jones’ eyes lit up,” or “It was one of the happiest days of his life” are unsourced. The subject matter remains intrinsically fascinating, however, and Swanson’s colorful account will hold readers’ interest throughout. Six Stars for This Book!

If any historical account for youth should get six stars, it is *Chasing Lincoln's Killer* by James Swanson. Written for ages 12 and up, this book moves at a quick pace and is chock-full of details that I had never seen before, my introduction to the subject having been a *You Are There* account of John Wilkes Booth by Walter Cronkite in the 1950s. Teachers, students, and homeschoolers will find this a valuable illustrated resource. Swanson has done a great job of making this historical account read like a novel. It includes dialogue, but all words and sentences in quotation marks are the actual words of eyewitnesses and participants whose works served as primary sources for this book. Atmosphere is included, but only that which would be apparent to a writer who put himself into the scene to imagine it. For example, the smells inside Surratt's tavern are listed as "wax, candles, oil lamps, tobacco, burning stove wood, whiskey, dirty clothes, and leather boots"--realistic details that help readers to place themselves in the company of the fleeing Booth and co-conspirator David Herold. Another plus is that Swanson does not take cheap shots at Mary Todd Lincoln or Boston Corbett, whose personal quirks are often used as grist for writers about Lincoln. Published by Scholastic Press, the book has ancillaries including a reading group activity guide, an educational poster, and downloadable activities on the publisher's web site. This book will grab the attention of any reader and spark interest in this great historical event. I myself am motivated now to read Swanson's New York Times bestseller, *Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer* on which *Chasing Lincoln's Killer* is based.

History comes alive in a book which reads like a novel

"Chasing Lincoln's Killer" is an adaptation of James L. Swanson's book "Manhunt" for young adults. Although I am far from a young adult, I enjoyed it so much I ordered the adult version.

As we all learned in basic history class, Abraham Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theater by John Wilkes Booth. What I (and I daresay many others) didn't know was there was a significant conspiracy to take down the entire government which was also supposed to happen that fateful evening. The author explains this in such a fascinating way it reads like a novel. Then, after the assisination the hunt is on for Booth and the others.

This book is listed for ages twelve and up and I would heed that as there are someone graphic depictions of the wounds suffered by Lincoln and their subsequent treatment.

Ancestors found

I purchased this book at the suggestion of a distant cousin. As it turns out it provides substantial insights into events directly impacting 4 of my ancestors. The political, cultural and religious events leading to their emmigration from Saxony to St. Louis are thoroughly documented in this book making it a must read for persons researching their family history if their ancestors were part of that particular emmigration. The events leading to their decision are explained in some detail which helps to personalize history. It is lengthy but it a good read.

I purchased the book from Concordia Publishers (cph.org) in order to learn more about the history of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. Also, since I am one half of German descent on my maternal side, I wanted to know more about the factors which prompted the emigration of Saxon Lutherans to America between 1839-41. This book, ably researched and well written by Walter O. Forster, opened my eyes to many aspects of the historical record I had not been previously aware of. The conditions in Germany and Saxony, the description of the issues facing the "state" Lutheran church, the role of the pietists, rationalists, and separatists, and how the intellectual and philosophical climate of Lutheran academia impacted on the perfect storm of social and religious upheaval are explored in depth.
No doubt Martin Luther, had he been alive during those chaotic times, would have wondered why so many intellectuals of the time had abandoned Lutheran orthodoxy to rationalism, and sought to be part of the age of enlightenment popular in academic circles. It has always been true that even the finest minds in the universities of Germany in those years could often read the pulse of the ordinary Lutheran erroneously, and perceive that the thinking of the day had thoroughly infected the masses. In my own narrow bias, I do not see the ordinary Lutheran farmer, working from dawn to dusk to support his family's needs, would have become apathetic, lose his faith to rationalist ideology, and join those who were irreligious. I like to feel that many ordinary people of the day, steeped in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, were protected by the Holy Spirit from heresy, as God, in His providence protects His children to this very day.
The book does an excellent job of describing Martin Stephan, C.W.F. Walther, and others who formed the group of separatists who followed Lutheran orthodoxy, and when the climate of Saxony was hostile to their faith and doctrines, determined to find a new home in America, where Europeans immigrants of all kinds found religious liberty. Interesting enough, the failings of Martin Stephan in both his religious leadership and personal life caused his downfall and removal as leader of the Saxon Lutherans a year after arriving in America. In my mind, it is a testament to the early Missouri Synod Lutherans that they would not tolerate such behavior and sought to honor God and the tenets of the faith by pruning the branch before the whole tree became rotten.
I recommend this book to all members of the LCMS, and to all people of German extraction and interested in the history of Germany and Saxony, as a supplement to other sources. It is easy enough to read, not as dry as some history records can be, and it is sure to enlighten the reader. Walter O. Forster's book is, in my view, a must read. Great for exploring family history!

I bought this because I have several ancestors who are mentioned in this book. It has been very useful for me in my geneology work. It is also well-written and easy enough to read but I wouldn't call it a "fun" novel to sit down and enjoy. It's mainly history and well-worth the price for anyone who is researching their family history.

Editors Beer and Nohria (Harvard Business Sch.) present a keenly written summary of the findings from their August 1998 conference on change, which featured a diverse group of academics, consultants, and CEOs who have researched, enabled, or led successful corporate-change transformations. The book is organized around debates attended by the conference's "change masters," and the editors present what they perceive as the two main organizational change models in practice today: Theory E (creation of economic value) and Theory O (development of organizational capability). Chapters reveal opposing debates on the purpose of change, leading the change process, and the focus of change, among other topics. A synthesis by a conference moderator follows each debate and is in turn followed by a conference critique and an epilog by the authors indicating what you already could guess: they have not yet broken the "code of change" but have helped better understand organizational change and identify key strategic considerations. In the summer of 1998, Harvard Business School hosted a research conference to review developments, best practices, and research in the field of change management. Among the participants were 50 leading scholars from diverse academic disciplines and management practitioners that included CEOs and consultants. Those in attendance put forward conflicting models of change. Several case studies of major but very different change efforts were presented, and attendees could not even always agree whether these attempts at change had been successful. Here, the editors, both Harvard business professors, organize the papers presented at the conference using a point-counterpoint format that reflects the debates that took place. They first distill two underlying theories of change: Theory E (economic value-driven change) and Theory O (organizational capability-driven change). They follow with seven sections consisting of two papers by opposing debaters and a chapter by a moderator that attempts to synthesize ideas presented. Such contributing luminaries as Peter Senge, Warren Bennis, Chris Argyris, Sumantra Ghoshal, and Christopher Bartlett offer their views. David Rouse

Finally--clear reasons about what works and what doesn't

When I read this book, I felt that I had been missing the obvious for a long time. The authors provide an explanation about why most of the changes in organizations don't work, whether they are Theory E or Theory O, and how you can combine the two for meaningful and effective results. Their work is based on lots of experience and for me they finally explained what the problem is--and what to do about it. As a change agent, this book gave me great new thinking with which to practice my craft.
