Dr. Tietze did a great job with this book. Very helpful to have when taking her course in order to reference the examples she uses in lecture. Clear and organized information that is very easy to follow. I wish I would have bought it instead of rent. It's worth the price.

Another steamy romance!

Hungarian born author R.P. James embellishes his biography as well as adding a photo of himself as a handsome buff model. So now we know that R.P. is a male hunk with a degree in Economics and a minor in creative writing. He further sates `When I am not busy writing, you can find me on the tennis courts or in a Taekwondo Dojang. I write books about strong sexy women and the hot alpha males who love them. Of course, step brothers and Billionaires are welcome too ;-) My tastes are every expanding, so keep your eyes peeled for my next hot, steamy, romance!' So we have another short novella from a young man who has a growing sophistication in writing steamy erotica. Not one to settle on Billionaires, or Stepbrothers, or Highlanders, or Shapeshfters or any of the many categories in which he places his sexy characters, he also explores same ex affairs in a time when that topic is the center of much media coverage. R.P. explores these affairs with a fine tuned sense of balance between character development and steamy sexual encounters..

Apparently Amazon doesn’t want this story shared, so just a bit of applause for KIDNAPPED – it has many themes that will satisfy completely anyone who enjoys steamy erotica. RP James never lets you down. Grady Harp, October 15

Don't bother with this, even if it is free

Formatting is awful, and the writing is so passive that it became boring. This is more like a first draft, than a final publishable novella that is worth spending money on. The story is dictated like someone relaying a story, rather than making you feel like you're seeing the story unfold as it happens. I tried jumping ahead to see if it improved, but ultimately the formatting got to me. Double-spaced, no spacing between paragraphs or first line indents, and with no conversation the entire first chapter, it was like a wall of text that was fluffed up to try to make money by artificially increasing the page count.

If you are interested in recent history and electronics especially. . . Well worth the read. . How the transistor came together and the men behind it. . Made for one of the significant leaps that enabled the big screen TV, computer and internet and many things we take for granted today!

Excellent technology history

A thoroughly informative and engaging look at the development of semiconductor electronics. A bit of physics background will help you get through some of the discussions of atoms and energy levels, but even if you skim this material, you'll better understand how semiconductor physics came about and how practical products left the lab and became the microprocessor, memory, and other chips that power "appliances" we take for granted. All too often we think of inventions as springing forth in one burts of energy. This book shows the slow and not-always-steady developments that involved more people that you can imaging. I recommend this book highly to engineers and non-engineers alike.

Accurate, Interesting, and Fun to Read

In the '50s I tried to understand transistor theory but just couldn't get it. This book helped me to see the simple fact that text and teachers of the era didn't get it either. Finally, in the '60s at Fairchild R&D I did indeed get it, and a whole lot more. Not all that long before I joined Fairchild, the company had started shipping the world's first commercially available integrated circuits. From those days on up until reading this book there were still a lot of questions gnawing at me, detailed questions not only on the origin of the transistor and learnings associated with it but on how Shockley's name somehow miraculously started appearing with those of Brattain and Bardeen on its invention.

This book, Crystal Fire, answered my questions and a lot of other questions that I should have been asking. But if you read this book, be sure to fill in some of the gaps by searching out on the web a follow-up paper also written by this book's author, Michael Riorden, "The Silicon Dioxide Solution". In this paper the role of Jean Hoerni of the traitorous eight is finally made clear. His name doesn't often come up prominently in discussion of integrated circuit history, but without his invention of the planar process while at Fairchild, Fairchild would more than likely not even be mentioned today in IC history discussion.

So .. Crystal Fire.. Who'd have thought the authors of a book this interesting from a, "people who were involved" perspective, could also explain, so clearly in near layman's terms, solid state physics principles and knowledge progression from the early years on up through invention of the transistor - and beyond. It takes a good degree of topic knowledge to bring the complex to a level that is understandable to those who are not involved in the complex, while at the same time writing a truly good read.

I highly recommend you take advantage of this resource

This past summer, I took upon the task of preaching through the book of Colossians. This week, I'm preparing a sermon on the closing verses of Paul's letter and felt it necessary to mention a wonderful resource that has served me well in this endeavor. John Kitchen's Colossians and Philemon for Pastors has proven to be an exceptional commentary that I found myself returning to time and again throughout this series.

Upon opening the book, Kitchens' knowledge and experience with Colossians becomes apparent. This was the first book of Scripture that he had preached through expositionally, and since that time he has maintained a fantastic annotated bibliography that would be worth the cost of the book itself. He is comfortable and capable in the Greek text, and it comes through on each page.

The book discusses the text of Colossians phrase-by-phrase and verse-by-verse, repeatedly drawing out Paul's emphases. Throughout his text, Kitchens' shares pastoral insight through brief "Ministry Maxims" and provides points of application for the reader, the pastor, and for the congregation. Drawing upon his study of Paul's letter, Kitchens' provides an exegetical outline, along with multiple preaching options - including a single-sermon through the text, a short sermon series, and a much longer sermon series.

Should you take the yoke of preaching through Colossians upon your shoulders, I highly recommend you take advantage of this resource. You will not regret it.

One of the best pastoral resources I have ever used

I used Dr. Kitchen's book as one of my resources for a current sermon series I preached on the book of Philemon. It was one of the best commentaries and pastoral resources I have ever used. I look forward to future volumes from Dr. Kitchen. This is a priceless volume in my library.

Obsessed!!

It’s been a while since I read a book that was on my To Be Read list and when I picked up Some Sort of Happy, I wasn’t sure how much I would like it. I was not prepared to feel such a bone deep connection to Skylar. On paper, we have nothing in common, but in my heart, I completely related to her. She is a middle child of three girls. So am I. She is very close to her sisters, so am I. Her sisters are awesome really high achievers. So are mine. And she feels like she has completely blown the things that people expected her to ace. So do I. Some of her inner dialogue was like reading my diary in the days following my realization that I was not cut out of the practice of law. I was around the age she is in the book when I had my moment of extreme self doubt and fear that I would never be successful.

So, from page 1, I was completely invested in Skylar’s character. This is my first Melanie Harlow book, but it will certainly not be my last. It’s a rare thing when an author can write romantic prose without it feeling overdone, cheesy or just plain embarrassing, but Ms. Harlow did it. I have SO many highlighted phrases in this book, it looks like the pages are yellow. Sebastian is hero like I’ve never encountered before. Struggling to deal with his obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) coupled with fear of commitment and lots of shame, Sebastian is incredibly frustrating. From his first encounter with Skylar, it became very clear that she was going to be the person in the relationship that kept them moving forward. Sebastian’s mind is bogged down by an almost crippling fear of hurting someone that in the beginning almost every sweet encounter was tainted by his inability to believe in the goodness of it. At the same time, his love for Skylar was breathtakingly genuine. He struggled because he wanted things to work out with her SO badly. He stepped out of his comfort zone early and often to let her know how he felt. And when he had moments of backsliding, he works really hard to get healthy so he can give their relationship a real chance. Skylar is also in the middle of a crisis. Bad decision making and doing what was expected of her rather than what would make her happy has led her to hit rock bottom. She is jobless, has had her one major accomplishment invalidated and at the age of 28 she is living with her parents and starting all over again. OMG I’ve been RIGHT THERE. EXACTLY. I only wish I had the presence of mind (and someone like Sebastian) to focus on my energies on what I loved and not jumping right back into the pattern of behavior that got me where I was in the first place. It was so sweet to see Skylar and Sebastian help each other out their dark corners and holes.

They are like the Ying/ Yang and was nice to read a couple people with REAL world problems. They communicated with each other and they both had individual goals that had nothing to do with their relationship. Ms. Harlow treated Sebastian’s OCD with a lot of respect and care and didn’t sensationalize or sugar coat any of the aspects of what it is like to live with someone with this disorder. A lot of the reviews called Sebastian a “difficult” man to love. I just couldn’t imagine how you couldn’t love him. What a beautiful soul who suffers from something he can’t control. And the things he could control, he worked hard on getting better. I love both of these characters. I loved this story, I loved their chemistry (JEEZ, it was HOT) and I loved how much they both resonated with me.

SSoH is like a little piece of magic; it’s funny, it’s sexy, and it’s heart breaking.

So here’s the thing… Sebastian Pryce stole the show in this book. I don’t know that I was expecting that based on the blurb.. or the cover… but it’s what happened. I felt overwhelming love and sadness for him. I wanted to put him in this little bubble and help fix him but then I also wanted him to use his rope and talk dirty to me. Sebastian is an enigma. He’s a contradiction of worry and sadness mixed with a light inside that just begs to shine. He has so many sides to his personality - each one makes him endearing. There’s something about Melanie’s writing that just sucks me in. Some Sort of Happy (SSoH for short) had her signature dirty and funny… but there is an underlying sadness and struggle that plague both characters - each for their own reasons.

I really loved Skylar's character; she’s feisty, supportive, genuine, and funny. She’s a little lost, having not fulfilled her career goals like she intended. She’s lacking self-confidence because of the things that didn’t work out and compares herself a lot to her more successful sisters. But as we get to know everyone more, we see that it’s not always what it seems on the outside. Her sister the doctor is lonely. The sister that bails her out with a temp job working at her coffee shop has relationship issues. But Skylar is a wonderful person, she just happens to be very hard on herself. I loved how she just knew how to break Sebastian's walls down. It was like she had a sixth sense when it came to his fears and thoughts. Skylar really is a great a girl, even if she doesn’t fully realize it. It’s a good thing that Sebastian is majorly clued in.

Like I said earlier, Sebastian stole the show and really made this book something special. His issues gave this book a different kind of depth than what we’re used to with Melanie’s books. In the same moment I found myself swooning over the sweetness and tearing up over the fear that Sebastian struggled with. From page one, I just KNEW I was reading something special. SSoH is like a little piece of magic; it’s funny, it’s sexy, and it’s heart breaking. It broke me a few times, but the dedication and patience that Skylar showed Sebastian made my heart sing. Really this book spoke volumes about love and support and how you’ll attempt to do anything to be your best self for the one you love.

I love it when a book blows me away, makes me think, makes me feel so many different emotions and Some Sort of Happy did just that. I would love to see more Skylar and Sebastian… because I know their love, their struggles, their future is going to be something special. 4.5 stars

And then, there's...OMFG THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER I JUST WANT TO HOLD AND HUG AND KISS SEBASTIAN 8 TIMES AND I NEVER WANT TO LET HIM GO. Phew. Those are just some of my thoughts. What it boils down to is this. Melanie Harlow can write. She writes her f**king a** off. And we all know this. But then, she delivers SSOH, and it's like WHERE DID THIS COME FROM?!?! Because what she gives us, is a story that ripped my heart out. It had me crying, smiling, laughing out loud, swooning. Oh yes people. SWOONING HARD. Stroking, rope, and car sex. OH MY!! I was shocked. And awed. By her MC, Sebastian Pryce. How Melanie can create such a character, has me floored. How she brings together the seriousness and matches it with the hotness. And add in Mel's signature humor. What you get is perfection. I'm not going to delve too much into the story. Because I don't want to rob you of the not knowing, in case you don't know. Because if I say one thing, it might give away another thing. But I will totally fangirl as to why I loved it!! Let's start with Sebastion. He's not your typical BBF. He's complex, misunderstood, and has some serious issues. My heart broke for him over and over. And he also made it pound hard. Not just for the way he loved and cared for Skylar. But for the man he was. His strength. His courage. His struggles. He's not an easy man to love. But the words and thoughts that poured out of him!! God!! Let me share a few of my favorites. I think I might of highlighted this whole darn book lol!
I loved her, and she loved me. Now it was my responsibility to keep her safe. keep her safe.

See what I mean!! One of Sebastian's sayings was "Two is better than one" this is something that stuck with me throughout the whole book. And even after.

So let's move on to Miss Skylar Nixon. When I think of Skylar, I laugh. She's this ball of energy. Who loves to talk and pry. Some might find this not appealing, but as Sebastian found it adorable, so did I. She's always been "the pretty one" out of her sisters. So after some life wake up calls, she's forced to come to terms about some things and has some growing up to do. She needs to make some life decisions. And who better to help her?? Why yes, Sebastian!! She is the perfect girl for him. She stands up to him and calls him out. She's not a quitter and she believes that he is worth the fight. She's so patient and understanding. God. They are perfect. They are what each other needs. He builds up her confidence when she needs it most. They help each other and they grow together.

And those are some of my thoughts. Now I will enter total fangirl mode. BUY. THIS. BOOK. Read it. Love it. Gush about it. Because I firmly believe that this is THAT book. The book people are going to be talking about. They are going to be shocked. This is different than anything Melanie has ever written. But yet it still holds true to all the great qualities that are of Ms. Harlow's writing. It's still filled with all those hot and amazing sexy times. It still has Melanie's LOL humor. It still has the great side characters that Mel is known for creating. The ones that leave you wanting to know more and hope they get a story too. She has stepped out of her comfort box and took risks. And has given us a heartbreaking, beautiful, and powerful love story. A story that will stay with me probably for a lifetime. And that my friends, is why this is one of the best books I've ever had the honor of reading. Thank you Mel, for taking a risk and for bringing Sebastian and Skylar into our lives.

Adventure in the Exotic Himalayas

Real life mountaineer and extreme adventurer Patrick Woodhead sets his first fictional novel in the enigmatic and lofty mountains of the Tibetan Himalayas. When longtime friends Bill and Luca, who have been scaling mountains together for 7 years, attempt Mt. Makalu, Luca gets a quick glimpse of a strange pyramid shaped mountain hiding behind clouds that has him believing he is hallucinating. Decending quickly due to an episode of altitude illness Bill suddenly incurred, Luca is bewildered as to what he actually saw. Months later after researching libraries for maps and Tibetan legends, he is determined to return to the peak to attempt another ascent. His belief is that what he saw was what the Tibetan legends call a beyul. A hidden valley sanctuary that is known to house temples of worship, and often treasure.

Unknown to the two climbers are two other sets of travelers heading in the same direction; two different journeys with two conflicting purposes. Fast ahead of Luca and Bill is a camouflaged women who is harboring a secret and leading the next young reincarnated Panchen Lama to the Monastery of Geltang. Hot on the trail of both Bill and Luca as well as the woman and the boy, is a group of ruthless and murderous Chinese soldiers who will do anything to prevent that boy take the throne.

The Cloud Maker, or The Forbidden Temple (depending on which edition) is an ultimate thrill-ride adventure novel written in a literary style. Filled with detailed descriptions of the majestic Himalayan mountains that paint a vivid and evocative depiction of not only the country and culture of Tibet, but of their fascinating monastic life as well as their ongoing plight with the Chinese. Good characters, an enchanting Shangri-la like locale, exemplary writing, some edge-of-your seat cliffhanging suspense, and a darn good plot, all make this first installment of Woodhead's new series a winner.
