E. M. Foner's Earthcent Ambassador series fun for all

i have been following this whole series with great enjoyment. Characters are well developed and surprises fun. The humor gives a series of chuckles. I especially enjoy the interaction on the part of the reincarnated sentient dog since I live with one also. Can't wait for the next book. With no sexual scenes, little battle gore and a cast which youth and adults can easily relate, I recommend this series for all readers. You won't be disappointed.

Not a human-robot love story, I promise

These books are fabulous. They are not too serious, but sometimes it's just nice to sit down to a pleasant, fun read. You know nothing terrible is going to happen, but it's probably going to be highly amusing, so that makes up for the lack of action, I think. If you're looking for something light, I recommend this.

Extremely good entertainment. Not a bunch of violence, no need for explicit sex, story flows nicely and no obscene language. Very few authors now days are able to write without making their stories full of the above. Suitable for all audiences.

Incisive, theory driven approach

Having just completed this work as part of self-preparation for an entrance exam to a Master's program in IR, I would like to concur with the first reviewer's points (2002 review) and add what I hope is a salient point. For pure theorists, this is an excellent analysis of competing views of IR philosophy. I would caution, however, that this book is not for the faint of heart. Even a more-than-casual student may be put off by the lack of case studies- in a nine-chapter book, it is not until we approach Game Theory in chapter six that more than passing reference is made to application. And, it should be noted, since the book was published in 1991, the case-study in question is the USSR. To be fair, the authors make no pretensions that they are writing a collection of case-studies. Those prepared to invest some brain-power in studying this book will come away with a deep understanding of arguments for and against nearly every theory of IR, within the constraints of publication date. Martin and Hollis's work would benefit from a look at the more recent developments in IR, including the rise of non-state actors over the last two decades, but this is a problem of chronology, not an inherent flaw in their work.

A great teaching tool

This review by a philospher of science and an International Relations theorist of the range of debates in International Relations theory is one of the more useful advanced teaching tools in the discipline. What distinguingshes this book from the usual run-of-the-mill IR theory textbook is the authors' concern to locate IR theory within the broader questions of philosophy of the sciences. The conclusions will certainly not please those who believe in positivism, and provides one of the most convincing critiques of positivist approaches in IR. This is a book for those who take theory serious, and are prepared to put some thought into their reading, and who believe that epistemology and ontology are important.
I have used this book in a postgraduate IR theory course virtually since it was published, and year after year my students find it the most useful and interesting piece of reading in the course

A classic exposition

This is an interesting addition to the field that was well ahead of the pack. Not as well written as Lawvere's later "Conceptual Mathematics" it covers more territory and becomes quite dense in its development of category theory which is now well established applied mathematics whose pure roots in sets is still evident.

Great introduction to category theory

I bought this book because I was interested in applying topos theory to quantum mechanics but I had no knowledge of category theory. Looking for books on Amazon this seemed to me perfect because it not only explains topos theory but also offers an introduction to category theory. This introduction can be followed without problems for those who had no prior knowledge of category theory, in addition the book's style is clear and concise, motivating each concept introduced. Of course you can not read it like a novel, the reader must work each example and exercise to gain mastery over the issues.

Clear, concise, and well motivated.

I have only read the first seventy pages of this book, but so far it is excellent. The character of the book can be likened to Kleene's "Introduction to Metamathematics" or "Mathematical Logic." The subject is well motivated by brief philosophical discussions, but the philosophy is not allowed to interrupt the flow of mathematical development. There are few exercises, but enough for the casual reader to check from time to time that he or she is understanding the material. The exposition itself is perfectly clear and concise, by my lights. Nothing important is skipped--one does not need to fill in the blanks in proofs--yet the book moves at a good pace. The focus of the book is on the development of Category theory in relation to its applications in logic. For this reason it is probably of more interest to a logician or a philosopher than to a computer scientist. Indeed, for the logician who is interested in Category theory this book cannot be missed. To put it bluntly, Goldblatt strikes me as a superior mind, even his brief remarks on set theory were enlightening. The book has been (to this point, at least) a very enjoyable read.

Written at the cusp of the 'consumer revolution', this book is both a quaint historical piece and a prophesy of what was to come. The tangential thesis of the book is that by the mid-fifties, the standard problems in capitalism -- those of production and distribution of goods -- were solved, but that this introduced another problem: all of these goods must be consumed. So, it became necessary to step up the techniques used to market these goods.
Advertising was nothing new, but the psychological intricacy and sophistication in it was ratcheted up significantly. Using Freud, Jung, and whatever other foundation proved workable, social scientists and psychoanalysts honed their skills to develop an ever-growing repertoire of tricks that would induce us all to spend and consume at ever-higher levels.
Two things make the book relevant today: 1) nothing has changed either in the economic situation or in the techniques, except that both have become even more intense (two thirds of the 2002 U.S. GNP depends on consumer spending); and 2) no other book has yet come forward to do a better job at showing, in great anecdotal detail and for a broad audience, what depth marketing is all about.

At first, one may be lead to the conclusion Vance Packard has gone off the far end with his accusations of subliminal mind control, but he provides so much factual data you finally come to realize this isn't any joking matter. Everyone should read this book, at least to become familiar with its theme, and to increase personal awareness of the underlying messages our minds are exposed to every day. One of the best books in the field of pain medicine

I am an interventional pain management specialist, I have been looking for a book that has clear and detailed images for the interventional procedures, I use these images for my presentations and training, Dr. Rathmell new Atlas was my ultimate helper !, it has wonderful, clear images in different angles that made the understanding and the explanation much easier.
It is concise yet very focused to the educational goal. The addition of the new 3D scan images make you see the spine in a whole new light. Compare it to other pain Atlases, I rated on the top.

An Important Resource for Learning Diagnostics

I work as a child psychologist, where mental health diagnosis plays a big part in my daily role. I also teach DSM/diagnostics to graduate level graduate students. For me, these casebooks are extremely helpful, both in my role as a diagnostician, as well as in my work as an instructor.

This book doesn't go into much description about DSM, the process of diagnosing, or treatment. Thus, you will need to have a copy of DSM 5. Unlike previous editions of the DSM case studies, these are organized by diagnostic category [e.g., Depressive Disorders, Somatic Symptoms, Sleep Disorders, etc.] and there is a brief description of what symptoms/characteristics these entail.

For the most part, this book is a collection of vignettes [103, if I counted correctly]. Some are relatively easy and straight-forward [e.g., Jane was referred for an urgent psychiatric consultation after she told her roommate that she was suicidal], while others are much more complex [e.g., Sally presented to a psychiatrist as part of a court proceeding that was intended to legally reassign her gender to female]. The goal is to get you to think about the symptoms being presented and for you to formulate your diagnostic hypotheses.

With many of the vignettes, you are left with more questions than anything, as these descriptions are brief. Unlike your more typical case study, you aren't provided with extensive information about the person's family history, prior mental health background, treatment history, etc. When that information is included, it is done so to help you come up with the accurate diagnosis, particularly in situations where time-lines, family history, or prior history must be taken into account. For teaching/learning purposes, however, this is ok. Most of these vignettes are only a page or two, with the goal of highlighting key characteristics of a particular condition.

The case studies presented are relatively diverse. Some are made up and some appear to be genuine cases. At the end of each, there is a brief description of what the diagnosis is, or what the diagnosis will be in the future in the symptoms persist. The discussion is tied directly to DSM, telling you which diagnostic criteria the person meets. When applicable, a discussion of differential diagnosis is included.

Consistent with the philosophy and model of DSM, this book doesn't give treatment recommendations. Therefore, if you determine that Client X has an Alcohol Use Disorder, ADHD, Persistent Depressive Disorder, and/or Antisocial Personality Disorder, you need to decide what to do next on your own [e.g., individual therapy, marital counseling, medication, group therapy, etc.]. The book will not guide you in this regard. What is helpful, however, is that all of the vignettes have 'Suggested Reading' at the end, should you want to learn more about a particular condition.

Even if you have a solid command of diagnostics, this is a good book to have. This is especially true as we try to learn about the changes in DSM 5 and what this means for our work.

Excellent for learning to think inside the test paridigm

As an LPC who was warned about the importance of learning how to take the lpcc exam, I decided to purchase this book.
It was initially suggested that I use a particular online subscription service and I did utilize the free trial, however I knew I wanted something to make me think from the perspective of an outpatient counselor. Having spent 3 of my 4 years diagnosing and treating inpatient sub-acute clients with SPMI's intertwined with substance abuse issues, the order in which I diagnose is often inverse of the usual decision trees. When taking the online practice exam, I usually arrived at the correct diagnosis, but lost many points on the earlier question.
So, I knew that I had to retrain my brain to think the way we learned in grad school. This book was appealing to me because it offered extensive explanations for why an answer is the best choice. Also, being a book I wasn't constrained to learning within the subscription period.
I loved this book and found that it helped me a great deal.
