About the Author
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College. A lifelong member of Parliament, Burke was the author of A Philosophical Enquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful, A Vindication of Natural Society, and Reflections on the Revolution in France.
Isaac Kramnick was born in 1938 and educated at Harvard University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1965, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, Yale and Cornell, where he is now Professor of Government. He is married to Miriam Brody Kramnick and lives in Ithaca, New York. Among his publications are Bolingbroke and His Circle, The Rage of Edmund Burke and numerous articles on eighteenth century topics. He has edited William Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and, with Michael Foot, The Thomas Paine Reader for the Penguin Classics. Most recently he is the author, with Barry Sheerman, MP, of Laski: A Lift on the Left.

Broad but emasculated coverage

"The Portable Edmund Burke" is useful in supplying a number of pieces not otherwise easily obtainable. It, like most books in the Viking Portable Library series, is missing the notes and especially the index that many people would have found useful. To make room for the 47 selections, several have been severely abridged. "Reflections on the Revolution is France" is whittled to leave only about 30% of it. Anyone needing this should look to a full-length treatment. Good ones include the Yale edition of Frank M. Turner, which has an excellent index, occasional notes, and several first-class essas; and Oxford World's Classic edition of L.G. Mitchell, which also has a helpful index and good notes. The speech on conciliation with America is similar chopped to a mere shadow of itself. The Lamont edition is not easily obtainable, which is a pity, but the notes and index of the Cambridge edition of Ian Harris will do well enough for most students. 'A Vindication of Natural Society' survives better (about half of it survives in this edition), but again the Harris edition is a better choice.

If you want a wide picture of Burke's writing, this text is probably for you. If you want to read any of his important texts, then choose something else.

Amputated rather than edited...

Burke's most important work "Reflections on the Revolution in France" is reduced from nearly 200 pages to 60 pages in this volume. Yet nowhere in the book does the editor describe what he selected or what he dropped, or the basis for his decisions.

Comparing my copy of "Reflections.." to this chopped version I found that Kramnick had dropped passages that were highly insightful.

When I discovered this, I could no longer be confident that the other works were not similarly mangled. I will now search for an anthology of works that is more respectful of the originals (or at least one where the editor is more open about his approach).

Not meant to be All The Burke You'll Ever Need

I think the 2-star reviewers are missing the point; the "Reflections" are widely available, whereas much of the best of Burke is found in shorter texts that are harder to find. One would expect the editors to favor those texts instead of providing yet another full text of a book that any Burke reader should already have.

(That said, one also suspects that Penguin wants to keep selling its edition of the full "Reflections" ....)

Whatever its faults, there's really no alternative to this volume for the common reader.

"Can scholars and students today become something like pirate philosophers

"Can scholars and students today become something like pirate philosophers?" A coherent account of what that might mean to the future of scholarly publishing is hard to find in a book that suffers from the performative contradiction of repackaging four previously published -- "revised and extended" -- journal articles, plus part of a fifth, and that retails for $42.00 (ebook $30.00) from MIT Press. One can overlook this with the rationalization that the future has not yet arrived, but it's harder to pardon Hall's hypocrisy when he criticizes publishers such as "Verso, Pluto, and Zero Books, that may indeed publish radical political content but in fact operate according to quite traditional business models...promoting their authors and products and providing more goods...to buy" (pp. 128-129). Hall details his own forays into Open Access (OA) publishing with Open Humanities Press and Living Books About Life, but his effort at traditional publication suffers from being repetitive, superficial in its treatment of copyright, and reading like previously published material that has been strung together with an unsatisfying conclusion tacked on at the end.

Hall derives his definition of 'pirate philosophy' from the ancient Greek verb 'pirago', which means to 'make an attempt, try, test, get experience, endeavor, attack.' Hall's attempt at 'pirate philosophy' seems more than a little effete in this book. It usefully reports on his own and others' work on new forms of scholarly communication, but levels repeated critiques of traditionalism at other authors, such as Rosi Braidotti, that could just as easily apply to Hall in this book. PIRATE PHILOSOPHY: FOR A DIGITAL POSTHUMANITIES is an informative survey of the current landscape of scholarly communication, but as a critical-theoretical intervention, it is mired in its own contradictions.

Faced by a Scholarly Book

The hypocrisy of Gary Hall’s new book is nothing short of breathtaking. Pirate Philosophy (2016) is an expensive book that rails against the profit motive, a jargon-laden academic book that rails against the inaccessibility of academia, a poorly written book that rails against the declining quality of academic writing, and a profoundly disorganized book that rails against the scattered nature of twenty-first-century academic life.

I wanted to like this book. Really, I did. Because Hall addresses so many issues which are dear to my heart, such as: the obnoxious paywalls that increasingly prevent citizens from accessing research their tax dollars paid for; the misguided MBA logic that’s come to govern most of our universities; and the hypocrisy of “radical theorists advocating a politics of the Commons, commoning and communism, yet appearing to let little of this politics have an impact on the decisions they make (or that are made for them) regarding their own work, business, role, and practices as authors” (12). He promises to show us how to fight the neoliberal corporatization of higher education. He promises to show us how to transcend the neoliberal model of the entrepreneurial academic. And he promises to show us how philosophers and theorists can best support student protesters and the anti-austerity movement. But he fails to deliver.

At times, even he seems to be aware of how silly his book is: “I am aware that some readers may be scratching their heads at this point over the seeming contradiction evident in the fact that the argument I am presenting here is being made in yet another conventional monograph, signed with a singular author’s name, and published with a brand-name press” (98). Hall never really makes sense of these glaring inconsistencies. Instead, like a therapy junkie I dated briefly in the 1990s, he seems to believe that telling us that he’s aware of the problem—and showing us how smart and self-aware he is—is enough. Guess what, Gary? It’s not.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb once quipped: “The longest book I’ve ever read was 205 pages.” Thinking along similar lines, I shall henceforth be able to say that the longest book I’ve ever read was 159 pages. Pirate Philosophy brings to mind Nietzsche’s description of a scholarly book in The Gay Science (1887): “In a scholar’s book there is nearly always something oppressive, oppressed: the specialist emerges somehow—his eagerness, his seriousness, his ire, his overestimation of the nook in which he sits and spins, his hunchback.” Gary Hall has a rather sizable hunchback. It’s composed of abstruse prose. And it renders his radical political pretensions vaguely ridiculous—because, as Saul Alinsky puts it in Rules for Radicals (1971): “It does not matter what you know about anything if you cannot communicate to your people. In that event you are not even a failure. You’re just not there.”

The kind of constipated scholar Nietzsche ends up celebrating in “Faced by a Scholarly Book” is a high-minded elitist with little interest in politics. He does not wish to be read by the people; he wishes to be read only by his peers. What’s more, like the philosophers Marx mocks in his Theses on Feuerbach (1888), he does not seek to change the world; he merely wishes to interpret it in various ways. Gary Hall, is, to some extent, the very opposite of this monkish denizen of the Ivory Tower. It’s obvious (indeed, at times, painfully obvious) that he desperately wants to be cool, relevant, hip, accessible, and democratic: a man of the people, an activist, a revolutionary. He wants to do more than just interpret the world; he wants to change it. But he won’t. Not with a scholarly book like this.

An excellent introduction.

Clearly written, this book offers to the non-specialist the theoretical framework as well as the numerical methods of the integral equations (IE). The book does not require strong skills in maths. It provides a useful classification of the IE. The link between IE and Boundary Value problems is clearly explicited.

2/Modeling of problems as IE
3/Volterra IE
4/Green's function
5/Fredholm IE
6/Existence of the solutions; Basic fixed point theorems
7/Higher quadrature rules for numerical solutions
A/Hankel transforms
B/GF for various Bounadry Value problems
Answers to exercises
This book is intended for absolute beginners in IE. It is effectively an excellent introduction to the world of IE (see also the Hochstadt). Readers more familiar with should turn to Estrada & Kanwal, or to Muskhelishvili.

The book represents a well-written and richly illustrated by examples textbook for those who want to be introduced to the topic... The book...might be very useful for engineers and students. Special features, distinguishing the book from others...are simple exposition, ample examples, and detailed solution manual for the exercises.
