A great piece of work for those who are starting and for those who are already all hands on crowdfunding their projects. Personally, I really liked the structure and the way each tip was explained. Wasting a lot of time on hours and hours non-stop research on Internet wouldn't give me that much detailed and comprehensive information as this e-book did! With this much anticipated first novel, told from the point of view of an illiterate, brutalized Harlem teenager, Sapphire (American Dreams), a writer affiliated with the Nuyorican poets, charts the psychic damage of the most ghettoized of inner-city inhabitants. Obese, dark-skinned, HIV-positive, bullied by her sexually abusive mother, Clareece, Precious Jones is, at the novel's outset, pregnant for the second time with her father's child. (Precious had her first daughter at 12, named Little Mongo, "short for Mongoloid Down Sinder, which is what she is; sometimes what I feel I is. I feel so stupid sometimes. So ugly, worth nuffin.") Referred to a pilot program by an unusually solicitous principal, Precious comes under the experimental pedagogy of a lesbian miracle worker named, implausibly enough, Blue Rain. Under her angelic mentorship, Precious, who has never before experienced real nurturing, learns to voice her long suppressed feelings in a journal. As her language skills improve, she finds sustenance in writing poetry, in friendships and in support groups-one for "insect" survivors and one for HIV-positive teens. It is here that Sapphire falters, as her slim and harrowing novel, with its references to Harriet Tubman, Langston Hughes and The Color Purple (a parallel the author hints at again and again), becomes a conventional, albeit dark and unresolved, allegory about redemption. The ending, composed of excerpts from the journals of Precious's classmates, lends heightened realism and a wider scope to the narrative, but also gives it a quality of incompleteness. Sapphire has created a remarkable heroine in Precious, whose first-person street talk is by turns blisteringly savvy, rawly lyrical, hilariously pig-headed and wrenchingly vulnerable. Push opens to find Precious?fat, unloved, illiterate, deeply confused, routinely raped by her father, and physically and emotionally molested by her mother?enduring her second incestuous pregnancy. Crawling from self-hatred and violent loneliness to determination and, occasionally, hope, Precious enters a pre-GED program, learns to read, bears her second child, and breaks from her parents, all under the inspiration of Blue Rain, her steadfastly encouraging and apparently tireless new teacher. Precious's name loses its irony but soon takes on a dark new meaning as she learns the extent of her father's abuse. Written as an internal monolog and journal entries by Precious, with her rudimentary spelling skills and abrupt transitions, Push is compelling, graphic, and occasionally facile but disturbing and not soon forgotten. Recommended.

I must admit, when I first began reading Push, I was a little uncomfortable with the narrative perspective because it was so blunt in its descriptions. However, as hard of a time as I had with reading this text, I had an even harder time putting it down. Sapphire's novel forced me to face the reality of the verbally and sexually abusive life that Precious Jones was forced to live in. Unfortunately, Precious is not alone and Sapphire took the first step in acknowleding this problem by putting it into words, even though the words make some uncomfortable. Once I started reading and listening to Precious, I could not let go. Precious Jones is a sixteen year old girl, verbally and physically abused by her mother and sexually abused by her father. She gives birth to two children, her own father also being father of her children. However, this book is not only an attack on the abuse that occurs within a family. Sapphire also places blame on the educational system that sits back while their students are deprived of educational advancement because of their situations at home. There are so many children, like Precious, who want to learn but come to believe that they are dumb because no one took the time to examine the problem closer. I hurt for Precious because she had no self esteem, how could she when her father stripped everything from her, including her virginity, before she was even out of elementary school. I could not put the book down without knowing how she was going to rise above her circumstances. I got so wrapped up in this book, believing in Precious and everything she went through. Sapphire's book involved so many emotions and was so inspiring that I believe no student or teacher should go without reading this book.

You will never forget Precious Jones

Claireece "Precious" Jones leads a tough life. She is abused by her mother, raped by her father, she is poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and mostly unnoticed. She is pregnant by her father with her second child. She is 16 years old and still in Junior High School.

When a school administrator finds out that she is pregnant again - they quickly try to find another source of education for her. She is sent to alternative school. It is in this new school where Precious meets her new teacher, Ms. Rain. Ms. Rain is the first teacher who has ever taken the time to understand and really help Precious - along with some of her classmates. For the first time in her life, Precious feels like she belongs somewhere. She connects with her classmates, but especially with her teacher. Here she experiences the kindness of others, something completely foreign to her. She also comes to realize that she is not alone.

To be honest, I had never heard of this novel before I began to hear of the movie "Precious". I like to read the novel before I watch the movie, so when I began to read all the reviews on Precious I quickly ran out and purchased a copy of Push.

I really didn't know what to expect - but to be quite frank, I was really taken in by this novel. I did find it a little disturbing to read - here's a sample of how most of the book read:

" I was left back when I was twelve because I had a baby for my fahver. That was in 1983. I was out of school for a year. This is gonna be my second baby. My daughter got down sinder. She's retarded. I had got left back in the second grade too, when I was seven, cause I couldn't read (and I still peed on myself). I should be in the twelf' grade so I can gone 'n graduate. But I'm not. I'm in the ninfe grade".

Once I got past the grammar and spelling issues - I was basically moved to tears. Precious' struggle is so raw, disturbing, sad... and yet there was hope within it too. I could not put it down and read the whole thing in one sitting. The whole time you're reading this you can't help but think that there are people out there who have lived this sort of life - and it makes it even more heart-breaking to read.

This is a story that will stick with you long after you have put it down. It will open your eyes to the reality that these issues do occur and will make you rethink your own problems (which seem so insignificant when compared to a life like this). But as you close the cover you will come to realize that you will never forget Precious Jones.

Unflinching, Gritty Portrayal

This is a unique book, dealing with subjects not usually dealt with---incest, abuse, living life on the last rung of the ladder.

It is told in a spare, direct prose style for the most part, with some poetry towards the end of the book.

PUSH tells, in the first person, the story of a black girl named Cleerice Precious Jones. Precious is one of those people, who never had a real chance in life.

Precious falls through the cracks of the system that is suppose to save children like her.

This is not a book for the easily disturbed or faint of heart. This is a raw, honest, hard-hitting book.

In sparkling, nimble prose, Cohen (Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World) recreates the story behind the "object"-in this instance, glass, paper and beans, although the object could as well be a toothbrush or a nail-and people whose livelihoods depend on those objects, a history of how the objects came to exist as well as a social account of the laborers' relationship to them and the consumer's mostly unknowing relationship in the chain. She restores the singularity of the worker by presenting individuals: widowed, 59-year-old Ruth Lamp, a night supervisor at the Anchor Hocking glass factory in Lancaster, Ohio; 32-year-old woods worker Brent Boyd, whose $600,000 harvester is a great curiosity in the lumber community of New Brunswick, Canada, where he, his wife and their two-year-old daughter live; and 26-year-old Basilio Salinas, who owns his own parcela of coffee field in a cooperative in Mexico, where he lives with his wife and three children. Cohen's acumen in focusing on these specific people makes her journey and ours particularly pleasurable; she signals connections among commodities and geography and time, supply and demand, raw materials and market forces. Drinking coffee in her local coffee shop while reading the Boston Globe had set Cohen to ruminating about the links between her, her coffee glass, the coffee and the newsprint of her paper. In tracing each material to its source, she delves into history (we learn that toilet paper existed in ninth-century China), politics and mercantilism (she brings in Marx and Thoreau here), and she and we discern that there is an essence in objects. And this difficult, enormously satisfying book reminds us also that the monetary system created our commodity world, fetishizing consumerism, which strips objects of their identities.

YA. In years gone by, individuals were closely linked to the land and production methods of all the commodities for which they traded. In this well-written book, Cohen moves between such a past and the present as she examines and reflects on glass production, newspaper printing, and coffee manufacture. The narrative begins in a ubiquitous coffee bar to establish a link between liquid coffee in a glass container and the accompanying presence of a morning newspaper. From there the narrative segues to introduce an individual working in each field. Brent Boyd is a Canadian lumberman who runs his business in New Brunswick Forest from an incredibly powerful and expensively specialized motor rig. On a lower economic scale, Ruth Lamp is a middle-aged supervisor at an Ohio glass factory. In Mexico, Basilio Salinas faces new opportunities in an expanding worker-owner coffee-growing venture. A Story for Everything

Glass, Paper, Beans is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. I have just completed it for the second time. Each time I read it, it opens my eyes a little more to the idea that to everything, there is a story. We as adults are often like little children who think milk comes from a store, having little or no concept of the work it took to get it there. It is comforting in a way to know that I am connected to so many people through the ordinary things of life, and those people lives are complex, creative, and hold a beauty all their own. I enjoyed Cohen's insight into three lives and how they interacted with initial stages of each product, bringing details of their private lives into play, weaving the two together. Cohen's book brings with it a greater appreciation for the ordinary things in my life. I know that people are behind them, not a new revelation, but now brought to life.

An absorbing look at our relationship to the things we use.

I loved this book! The author starts with a simple train of thought and follows it on a sort of quest to investigate the "stories" behind everyday objects. In the course of her investigations she examines myths, histories and philosophies surrounding these things. The book is kept from becoming dry by the vivid pictures she makes of the people she meets in her investigations. Beautifully, almost poetically written, she uses simple language to convey some very complex ideas. ...A book to make you think.

Hope men don't read this and think that this kind of behaviour is what women want

What I liked:

GOOD WRITING: I've read Sylvia Day in the past, and her writing flows. There are no annoying typos, actually I found one, but the novel is not typo-ridden, which seems to be a common thing with Kindle books. There was some repetition but the author's vocabulary is wide enough that you don't feel like you're reading the same thing over and over again.

FAST-PACED PLOT: The story moved along nicely. Something was always happening to move the story forward, but wasn't always sure which direction the story was heading in.

SETTING: Lots of modern references and brands mentioned, but not overdone. There's no doubt that we are in the high-flying world of upper class New York.

What I didn't like:
CHARACTERS: Everyone in this book is too perfect, at least on the outside. Can't remember how many times Gideon was referred to as the hottest, sexiest, fittest, most eligible, gorgeous [insert Adonis quality here] man in the city. And the heroine was physically attractive too, as was her roommate, and her gym instructor, her mother, the receptionist etc etc. It was a pity that everyone was model material and there were no ugly Smeagols anywhere, not even as interesting side characters.

SEX SCENES: It's hot, until it's not. There have got to be at least 20 sex scenes in the novel, double the number of orgasms, triple the number of references to Gideon's constant erections (was he on Viagra?) and an untold number of times that the characters moan each other's names. It gets a bit old. I began skipping the sex scenes, which became banal and to be honest, a bit of a turn OFF. Sometimes less really is more.

EMOTION: Or lack thereof. Gideon isn't subtle at all. He's like a two-year old who wants something and won't stop pouting until he gets it. He has a lot of pretty words and flashy gestures of love, but as he himself put it, romance isn't in his repertoire. If you're looking for a love story, Bared to You is not that. You won't find characters that come to the realisation of their feelings for each other through some intense emotional conflict. What you will find are two horny good-looking people intent on banging each other senseless who somehow, from the get go, have an urgent, desperate and unhealthy need for each other. How? Why? I'm still not sure.

OBSESSIVE POSSESSIVE STALKERISH BEHAVIOUR: As another reviewer mentioned, the cringe factor is pretty high in this book. If someone did what these characters do in real life, they would probably have restraining orders against them. For example, *** SPOILERS AHEAD - STOP READING HERE IF YOU HAVEN"T READ THE BOOK AND INTEND TO *** After Eva runs off from him the umpteenth time, he leaves Eva 21 messages in the space of about 30 minutes. 21. That's a lot of calls. Before that, he seems to have amassed all the information he can about her, from who she's living with (and his sexual orientation) through to whether or not her gym instructor is married. But Eva's no better because she signs up for Google alerts on his name. Like really? People do that? Later, Eva sends Gideon three, count them, THREE separate lots of flowers with messages in one day and then hand delivers him a gift. I mean, really? You don't think that's a tad bit much for just ONE day? I guess it isn't when your lover takes a photo of you sleeping in your own bedroom, then has your WHOLE bedroom recreated in his own home...to the detail. And that's just so when you need space, you can run off your to 'own' room without leaving his house. Eww. Eva's mother traces her cellphone, Gideon traces Eva's credit card - I mean, billionaires stalking people when they could be out yachting, travelling to exotic places, flying to the moon or whatever it is billionaires do?

Then there's the jealousy. Gideon is suspicious of any unfamiliar male that he hasn't got a file on and Eva is suspicious of every female in Gideon's life, even his mother (!!). Both characters are so insecure, their actions become laughable. ["Hello," he purred, his icy gaze on Martin. "Introduce us."] Sexy and possessive? Or just plain rude?

At the end of the day, I liked this book, but I didn't. Sylvia Day has made a good business decision to capitalise on 50 shades (which I haven't read because I didn't care for the kindle sample I received) and I still like her writing skills. She creates vivid scenes and has great command of language. But I'm not crazy about some aspects of 'Bared' so I probably won't read the rest of the series. I don't give a toss about Gideon's inner demons, and Eva seems to have it together (she's a likeable heroine). There were so many declarations of LOVE(from Eva) and NEED(from Gideon) that its already clear from this first instalment that the two will be sticking with each other through thick and thin while copulating fast and furiously. Glad I read part one, but not holding my breath for part II.

Better than Fifty Shades of Grey!

First off, I haven't written a review in a while. After reading BARED TO YOU by SYLVIA DAY I felt the need to.

If you're looking for a book similar To Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James then BARED TO YOU is THE BOOK! Some may think it's a rip of Fifty, but in my case I appreciate it for what it is... Two emotionally F'd up individuals hoping to find some kind of happiness. In my opinion I think it's better than Fifty Shades and it may have to do with Sylvia Day being a seasoned author. You can be the judge of that.

From the moment Eva and Gideon meet, there's a connection they can't resist. Initially it's a physical attraction that creates interest. They try to keep it casual, however one broken individual can recognize another and that's what Eva recognizes in Gideon. Although he tries to deny and in the process hurts Eva he always finds himself chasing after her because she sees him. Accepting the knowledge brings them closer, but not wiser regarding their relationship. They understand they'll need to take baby steps if they want their relationship to work. You do see them grow and learn from their mistakes.

How can two dysfunctional individuals make a relationship work? Their relationship is emotional, intense and complicated. They're obsessed, possessive and jealous of each other. Put all that together and the sex is explosive, their love is sweetly intoxicating, their relationship at times is stormy but when they're happy it's beautiful.

Will Eva have enough patience to overcome her frustrations with Gideon withholding his past from her? I hope so. Like Gideon, Eva and Cary (Eva's best friend), I myself is a part of the F'd up group so I can relate to their story. They all deserve their happily ever after as I have. ^_^

I can't wait for the next book, DEEPER IN YOU, to learn more about Gideon. My only hope is that it's not like Fifty Shades Darker. I love Fifty Shades of Grey, but in the second book, I felt as if I read the first book all over again. I have yet to read the third book.

Review of Bared To You by Sylvia Day

This is the first book that I've read by Sylvia Day and I wasn't really sure what to expect. WOW!! After reading Bared To You, Sylvia Day has a new fan and I have a new favorite author!! I loved, loved, loved this book. Right from the start it grabbed me and drew me in and still hasn't let go. I finished it in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. I fell in love with the Gideon and Eva right from the start.

Bared To You is the story of Eva and Gideon (great name for him). The story is told from Eva's point of view and I only wish that I could have heard it from Gideon's also. They are both extremely attractive and are instantly drawn to each other, but neither is looking for a relationship. Eva has just moved from San Diego to New York with her roommate. It is when she goes to her office building for the first time, that she runs into Gideon, literally, and their lives are forever changed. They each struggle with their own internal demons, insecurities, and past hurts. Through the story, each tries to overcome their issues as well as help each other. I love that Sylvia Day wrote these characters as not perfect, they both unintentionally made mistakes that hurt the other but they tried to learn from them and build on their relationship. Sylvia Day shows that relationships are hard and they take work and compromise from each person involved. It is not always sunshine and flowers, but when two people are meant to be together, it can be amazing. And their story is absolutely amazing, so much more then I expected and I loved every second.

I fell in love with Gideon, he is the ultimate Alpha Male, he says the best things to Eva. It was a good thing I read this on my Kindle, because in paperback I wouldn't have been surprised if the pages melted!! It has some of the HOTTEST, STEAMIEST, INTENSE, SEXIEST sex scenes that I have ever read!!

Eva and Gideon are perfect for each other and you can't help but root for them on their journey towards a happily ever after. There is a great entertaining cast of secondary characters that have me hoping for their happily ever after as well.

Silvia's website states that this is the first book in the Crossfire series that follows the emotional and romantic journey taken by Gideon Cross and Eva Tramell. Bared To You is an excellent start to the series. I am definitely along for the ride on Gideon and Eva's journey and eagerly await the next book. I highly recommend this book. It is absolutely a reread for me!!
