If they had communicated sooner they could have avoided a LOT!

Annabel- Lee, known as Lee, is an assistant to a wine buyer. She and her boss are on their way to another potential supplier in France. Once there she meets Gilles Frebourg, Comte de Chauvigny whom she had known years ago. When she was sixteen one of her friends had written the 25 year old Gilles a letter that was forged in Lee's hand and signed Lee's name to the letter. Gilles was not happy to be the recipient of such a vulgar letter and let Lee know this. She was heartbroken and embarrassed because she actually did have a very bad crush on him.

Gilles takes advantage of Lee's presence by telling a rather forward woman who has been his mistress that he and Lee are engaged to be married. He proceeds to blackmail Lee after the woman leaves. Gilles has kept the letter that she had "written" all those years ago and threatens to reveal the contents to Lee's very proper fiancé, Drew, unless she agrees to marry him and stay with him for awhile. He tells her that they will part ways after a brief period of time and she can then return to her fiancé as though nothing has happened. Drew never needs to know. Gilles does not want to marry the other woman, Louise, as she is rather free with her favors and he doesn't want to have a wife that is like that plus he wants some land that her father will sell to him. Lee feels trapped and so she agrees to his outrageous blackmail. Gilles believes she is not a virgin and treats her accordingly. He is very hateful and mean to her throughout their marriage. Not only does she have to deal with Gilles and his erroneous beliefs but she also has to deal with the housekeeper which was recommended by the ex-mistress, Louise, and Louise herself. When Gilles discovers that she is a virgin her is further incensed. However from that one time she finds herself pregnant and Gilles feels that she doesn't want the baby while she comes to realize she still loves a man who may not ever love her. When Lee realizes she still loves Gilles she breaks off her engagement to Drew. Louise is behind several more machinations that befall Lee and Gilles eyes are slowly opened to what is going on around him. Gilles ends up defending her honor and it makes up for a lot of the hurt that he had inflicted upon Lee over the course of their marriage.

I like this book, but I have to say the leading man in this story infuriated me with his attitude most of the book. With that said, it is a keeper and I will read it again. The female lead was believable and very sweet.

Although I REALLY wanted to SLAP the hero in this story for his over aggressive attitude to the heroine, it was a pretty fair story.

Schneider, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and professor emeritus with over forty years experience in working with peoples' losses and has formed a unifying model for understanding the nature and process of grief that vastly expands previous concepts (such as Kubler-Ross' five stages). Grief does not follow pre-determined stages, but rather proceeds along some common phases and confronts us with three fundamental questions: what is lost?, what remains?, and what is possible? Schneider's model is also based in clinical research using an inventory he developed over thirty years, the Response To Loss Instrument.

Excellent Book to Accompany One on a Journey into Grief

This book introduces a fresh and unique approach on the subjects of loss, grieving, and healing. It redefines the grieving process for those who choose to take the journey. Transformation awaits each who embraces his/her own grief. The author shares his personal journey of loss and grief and how it transformed his life; freeing him to accompany his clients on their unique journeys into their personal losses, subsequent grief, and their individual transformations. The book is quite readable and includes a Life Change Inventory self test, as well as a Response to Loss Inventory. Information is also included about Integra, The Association for Integrative and Transformative Grief. I would highly recommend this book for professionals, as well as laypersons. If you are in the midst of grief, the book might seem overwhelming with its in depth information....finding a health care provider who is familiar with the concepts in this book can temper this and help to guide you through the process, arriving at your own transformation. Dr. Schneider has recently written two new books that speak more to the layperson and may prove less intimidating if you are in the process of grieving. These books are: Grief's Wisdom, Quotes for Understanding the Transformative Process and The Overdiagnosis of Depression, Recognizing Grief and Its Transformative Potential.

A critical review: Finding my way

Finding my way is a beautifully written book representing John Schneider's comprehensive description of the transformative model of grief. Schneider has the ability to connect with the reader, capturing the essence of the grieving process in a manner that resonates with one's individual story. Schneider's writing style incorporates the use of rich metaphors which is so lacking in the traditional approach commonly used in texts for health care professionals. As a clinician and educator,I have found this book to be an invaluable resource for myself, clients in psychotherapy, and students. Clients have found this model extremely helpful in normalizing and validating their own grieving process, in providing a frame for reflecting on their own journey, and in offering hope for the future. Students have appreciated Schneider's comprehensive approach, his writing style, and rich anecdotal material. As a personal and professional resource, this book should be on the shelves of every healthcare professional, caregiver and layperson who is interetsed in better understanding the multidimentional experience of grief. It is a resource that one will go back to over and over again.

With this book, Burke Davis provides an excellent piece of work that documents the important and oft-forgotten contributions of black Americans who fought during the American Revolution. While most history books focus on white heroes such as George Washington, Paul Revere, and Ethan Allen, this book focuses on the black Americans who fought bravely and heroically for freedom and independence in the American Revolution.

When the Revolution started, the American colonies had a population of about two and a half million people, one fifth of whom were black, mostly slaves. The courage and bravery demonstrated by blacks during the Revolution influenced legal decisions in the northern states to abolish slavery, leading to freedom for about 60,000 slaves. Yet for the most part, acts of heroism and the contributions of blacks during the Revolution either went unrecorded or were not widely publicized.

Examples of the men described in this valuable book are William Lee, who worked closely with George Washington through most of the Revolution and became one of the general's closest companions, and James Forten, a patriot who worked aboard an American privateer to prey on British shipping and who later, as an inventor and manufacturer, became one of the wealthiest men in Philadelphia. While Davis focuses on the deeds of black men, he does give a brief nod to the important role of black women during the Revolution, including Phyllis Wheatley, a poet with sharp words on religious, moral, and political issues.

Burke Davis has created an informative and well-research historical account using available resources from historical societies, museums, university special collections, foundations, the Library of Congress, the National Archives, newspaper articles, and various published books. This book will make a useful addition to any non-fiction collection that provides young students with a complete and racially-balanced account of the American Revolution.

Not for our family

I was hoping to find an unbiased, factual account of black heroes during the American Revolution for our homeschool curriculum, but this book carries a very negative, rather than matter-of-fact, tone that paints all white historians in a negative light. Sweeping generalizations are made. This is not the tone we want to present in our racially diverse family.

Book or pamphlet...you be the judge

Although covering the basics of the Fast Mimicking Diet (FMD), this book is horribly short on useful information (and horribly short period...took me less than 30 minutes to read the whole book), nor does it provide prospective adherents with useful information on implementing the diet. The suggested menus provide no details (e.g. no recipes). I gave it two stars because it wasn't totally useless.

Here is a book with an overview of the various fasts that a person can go on and it’s not just not eating for a day or a week as in a religious fast. Some popular fasts explained within are the 5:2 Diet, meaning you stick to your normal diet for 5 days and then restrict your diet to 25% of your normal calorie intake for 2 days over a 7 day period. There is the Alternate-Day Fast where you fast every other day, but the book introduces the Fast Mimicking Diet or FMD just introduced in 2015. One thing I liked about this book is how it actually showed the research conducted and the results that were run on mice and humans.
There is a strict diet plan that is outlined in the book for a 7 day period. It seems to work really well as speeding up metabolism, lowering cancer risk, lowing blood sugar and reducing fat, among other benefits.

Fasting new age style!

I have never heard of FMD until I read this book. It is quite an interesting diet, one that I think millions of persons should be on because the vast majority of them are unhealthy and needs to change their diets to live a healthier lifestyle. The book simply shows the benefits of FMD and what you should expect from such a diet. It also shows you the right way to do FMD. I appreciate the information very much as it can also be used by ordinary people who are not struggling with weight issues but really and truly want to live healthier.

Odelia did a good job researching FMD. Read it and see whether or not FMD is right foe you. I am definitely going to try a few things from the book myself.

better books for identification

While it appears like a field guide, and arguably it is, if you live in North America, this is not a great book. It misses a lot.

It's basically a book that gives a sample of reptiles around the world but is useless for identification in any one location. So, if you are looking to learn a lot about different reptiles around the world, then this is a good book. If you are looking for a field guide to North America pass. It's too bad, because the pictures and descriptions are great, but they are just incomplete for each region. I would love one of these focused just on North America.

For decades social scientists have studied the social forces that shape criminal behavior, particularly that which occurs in urban communities. Robert Crutchfield's latest publication, Get a Job: Labor Markets, Economic Opportunity, and Crime, represents the culmination of his extensive research on the relationship between crime rates in urban areas and the types of employment available in those areas across America's cities. Readers who believe that the relationship between crime and work that Crutchfield describes is "obvious" miss the the connection that so few social scientists have explored thoughtfully in conjunction with other attributes of urban areas using a combination of empirical and ethnographic data. The strength of Crutchfield's work and much of his writing and research is the clarity of his arguments and the compelling and obvious implications they have for public policy, social change and, most importantly, the reduction of crime and violence in many American cities. His work is seminal in the literature on the causes of urban crime and in public policies related to reducing crime.

Says the same things over and over again. Tries to explain how the lack of a good job makes a person more likely to commit crime and gives data to support that theory. There are a few paragraphs of thoughts as to how society might alleviate this problem. I wasn't very interested in data to support the obvious. I was hoping for more ideas on dealing with the problem.
