Wonderfully satisfying read

When this book was recommended to me, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Admittedly the subject matter wasn't what I'd generally select for myself, but I figured why not give it a shot? Imagine my surprise when I couldn't put it down. This book is beautiful and oh so satisfying--a rarity in many of the works that I read. Call it fate, kismet, whatever--the connection that these two women share is remarkable and the beautiful child that manages to bring them together is clearly heaven sent. The author has a truly lyrical use of language--there's a flow to her writing that draws you in--particularly after the first chapter where it's clear that she's found her rhythm. I wasn't shocked to find out that she's a filmmaker--obviously she has a unique vision as her characters really leap off the page. The two lead females in particular will be great gets for some Hollywood actresses. Also, fair warning: don't read this book on an empty stomach. The decadent descriptions of Irena's magnificent food alone will make you gain ten pounds (and some of that will come from champagne cocktails!). Maybe we'll get a recipe book next?! Read this book. It's a love story in the purest, most compelling sense.

Not what I expected

The story line was decent enough, although events were very improbable at times. It kept my attention fairly well, but I sure did not expect a lesbian love scene.

A beautiful debut!

ALMA OF MY HEART is a pleasure to read from start to finish. Susanna Lo weaves a web of magic around the characters she's created, so it's impossible to read their story without falling in love with them. Irena and Tatiana couldn't have more contrasting lives, but are miraculously brought together in the City of Angels by their own angel, Alma, the daughter they share.

I appreciated the insight into Irena's predicament as she does everything in her power to raise her baby, the result of a terrible rape. But it becomes evident that love alone cannot feed and clothe a child, and in an emotionally wrenching scene we see Irena give her baby up, knowing it is for the best. The felicitous route that brings baby Alma to a new family, and then years later brings her two mothers face to face at last, is beautiful beyond words.

The flavors and aromas of Irena's spectacular cooking are shown to have special powers that draw good people towards her and ultimately project her from poverty onto the path towards happiness and fulfillment. I was reminded of the fun magic-realism in the films MISTRESS OF THE SPICES, WOMEN ON TOP and CHOCOLAT.

ALMA OF MY HEART is a unique and spellbinding story that the world has not seen before, and I cannot wait to watch it unfold on the big screen.

My Mother Loves This Book

I bought this book for my mother since Padre Pio is her hero. I really don't have any first-hand experience with this publication, but my mother says that it's one of the best Pio books she owns....and she owns quite a few. :)

excellent includes excerpts of letters

padre pio is a most fascinating and inspiring person whose love for God completely guided his life. there are many excellent books about Padre Pio, this too is excellent very detailed, but what i do like particularly about this, is the inclusion of letter excerpts he had written to his superiors. that whole collection is published but it is not inexpensive, so for a glimpse into padre's writings, this is a good source. the book by Father John Schug is also excellent for spiritual commentary, etc...and for biography it is hard to beat Fr. Carty's original work on the saint. For a short but information-full book youmight check out PadrePio Man o f Hope renzo allegri the author.

A concise and necessary collection

Isaac Asimov was one of the most prolific writers not just in science fiction, but in all of literature. Having written upwards of 500 books (distributed throughout every category of the Dewey Decimal System), compliling the definitive Asimov omnibus, clearly, is a monumental task. This, the first in a three volume series (I have never come across the two subsequent volumes), collects a good portion of Asimov's short fiction (though, indeed, not as many as the title implies) - including some of his earliest work, and some of his best. This collection includes about 50 stories, comprising the previous short story collections Earth Is Room Enough, Nine Tomorrows, and Nightfall and Other Stories in their entirety. Included in it are some of the classic science fiction short stories of all-time: Nightfall, The Last Question (one of my absolute personal favorites, as well as Asimov's own favorite of his writings), and The Dying Night; as well as personal and sentimental favorites such as The Ugly Little Boy, Jokester, Dreaming Is A Private Thing, Profession, and Breeds There A Man...? It also includes such widely anthologized pieces as It's Such A Beautiful Day, The Fun They Had, and The Machine That Won The War. The collection also picks up several lighter pieces - such as examples of Asimov's poetry, which show that, despite his often leaning toward the cerebral in his stories, the good Doctor was also one big goof. Though by no means a complete overview of Asimov's short fiction, this is a very good place to start if you are new to the author - or if you want to get a good portion of his works in one convenient place. One need not go into the individual merits of these stories: Asimov's reputation precedes itself. This is some of the greatest science fiction ever written, essential to any fan of the genre, or of imaginative writing in general. Very highly recommended.

Heck yeah!

This is a GREAT collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov, one of the best science-fiction short-story writer ever. It contains over forty of his best works, including Nightfall and the Ugly Little Boy. The book itself is pretty big, with nice-sized font. Overall, a nice, sturdy copy of awesome short-stories. A must for an Isaac Asimov fan.
